Biological laboratory safety tips

Every student studying Biology has a dream of scientific research, a white coat, a bunch of complex equipment and instruments, and a bright laboratory. For every fresh student who will enter the laboratory, they will be excited. But wait, are we forgetting something, what should we learn first before we enter the lab?

Is it Qubit quantification, or PCR amplification, or RNA extraction? All not! History has taught us that the first thing we must learn in the laboratory is to pay attention to safety, to protect ourselves, and to protect the lab we are in as well. So here is a summary of some biology laboratory safety tips to share with you.

NO.1 Good Self-protection

Although we are not required to wrap up like Spider-Man, but the important parts still need key protection. Gloves, masks, lab coats are indispensable. Whatever kind of experiments are inseparable from the hands, so hands will always be possible to contact a variety of chemical reagents and biological samples, therefore, gloves must be worn well. If the gloves are damaged, they must be replaced in time. The lab coat is also to protect your skin from abuse. And masks are to prevent lips and reagents from close contact, and goggles and headgear need to be worn if necessary.

NO.2 Proper Use of Instruments

When you enter a lab, you can't help but use various instruments, and although it can get our adrenaline and dopamine pumping, please hold on to the fact that if you don't do it right, danger can be following. That's why it's important to use instruments and equipment correctly! For example, when exhausting an autoclave, never deflate too quickly to prevent the pressure from dropping rapidly, the liquid from rolling and boiling, overflowing from the sterilization chamber and scalding yourself. Then there is the centrifuge, when using it must pay attention to trim and cover. If not, the sample or the instrument will be damaged, nd the most serious thing is that the sample will fly out of the lid, causing casualties. To sum up the phrase " do not reach out for unknown instrument ", in the dangerous laboratory, randomly moving the unknown instrument may cause serious consequences anytime.

NO.3 Daily Precautions

First of all, food and drink are strictly prohibited in the laboratory. The second is waste disposal. In general, waste in the laboratory can be divided into waste gas, waste liquid and solid waste according to waste forms. Waste gas in biology laboratory is rare, but if there are volatile or toxic reagents, it must be operated in the fume hood or safety cabinet. Safety depends on everyone. As for waste liquids, biological experiments often contain phenol, cyanide, formaldehyde waste liquids, which must be promptly poured into the waste bucket, waiting for uniform reclamation; acid and alkali waste liquids shall be discharged only after neutralization; waste liquids containing microorganisms and even pathogens shall be uniformly reclaimed after sterilization. Finally, for solid waste, infectious biological waste is placed in yellow garbage bags and sterilized, and ordinary waste is placed in ordinary garbage bags to be recycled.

These are a few important experimental safety tips, and I hope they will not douse your enthusiasm for entering the lab. In short, the experiment is valuable, the paper is more valuable. Both can be given up for life. Only by managing the daily work of the laboratory can we ensure that the laboratory work is carried out in an orderly, effective and stable manner, which promotes the continuous improvement of product quality.
